What Is An AccreditedOnline MBA Program?

There are various reasons for a person to desire a Master ofBusiness Administration degree. Maybe there is a true desire to learn moreabout how business and industry works. Maybe the person wishes to start their owncompany. Changing careers, or advancing within an existing company, also arereasons to pursue an MBA.

A Master of Business Administration degree, or MBA, is apostgraduate degree students who have mastered the art of business can achieve.Graduates who have obtained MBAs have studied the theory and applicationprocess of business and its management principles. They have gained knowledgewhich can be applied in a number of real life business scenarios.

There are a number of ways in which a person can earn anMBA. Many reputable colleges and universities offer classes in both atraditional classroom setting, as well as online versions of their MBAprograms. As the majority of people pursuing MBAs are current workingprofessionals, online programs have soared in popularity within the last coupleof years.

But selecting a quality online program can be tricky. Thereare a lot of programs being offered, as evidenced by a quick search of theinternet. However, not all programs are created equally. Some, known as“diploma mills,” make promises to help students earn an MBA degree in just afew weeks at a relatively low cost. Potential MBA students who see these kindsof advertisements for MBA programs should run the other way and fast.

Proper MBA programs take roughly two to two-and-a-half yearsto complete and cost anywhere from $10,000 to $100,000, depending on thecollege or university where the program is being offered. “Some MBA programsare much stronger than others,” said Aafke Loney, a recent MBA programgraduate. “You have to decide as an individual if you are using this degree asa means to get your foot in the door at a company, or as a means to start yourown company. If so, then you have to choose a reputable program.”

But how do you select a quality program that will produce adegree that can enhance, rather than detract from, your professional resume?

One of the first things to look for in an MBA program –whether it is offered through a traditional college setting or online – is accreditation.At present, there is only one reputable international accreditation agency foronline MBA degree programs, and that is the Association to Advance CollegiateSchools of Business, also commonly referred to as the AACSB. The AACSB has beenin business since 1916. When researching an online program, be sure to ask ifit is accredited and, if so, by whom. Programs without accreditation probablyare not worthy of enrollment and likely will not offer a boost to yourprofessional resume.

According to information from the AACSB, over 650 member institutionspossess accreditation through their agency. Of the programs which have earnedAACSB accreditation, 42 offer undergraduate programs, 30 offer master anddoctoral level programs and 178 possess additional accounting accreditation. However,only 5 percent of the world’s 13,000 business programs have sought and earnedaccreditation from the AACSB.

The University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler BusinessSchool is ranked in the top five for quality business schools in the nation. Italso has earned accreditation from the AACSB.

Other business school MBA programs which have earnedaccreditation include, but are not limited to: Arizona State University, BaylorUniversity, Brigham Young University, California State University, DukeUniversity, Harvard University, Quinnipiac University and the University ofPittsburgh.
