A Master of Business Administration degree, or MBA, is apostgraduate degree students who have mastered the art of business can achieve.Graduates who have obtained MBAs have studied the theory and applicationprocess of business and its management principles. They have gained knowledgewhich can be applied in a number of real life business scenarios.

Prior to being admitted into an MBA program, applicantseither will have to take the GMAT or the GRE.

The GMAT, or Graduate Management Admission Test, is astandardized, computer-based assessment that is used to determine whether astudent should be admitted into a post-graduate degree program. More than 1,500colleges and universities in 83 countries use the GMAT as part of theadmissions criteria.

The GRE is a standardized test that evaluates academicabilities, as well as reasoning, analytical and critical-thinking skills.

Programs which do not require either of these tests as partof the application process likely are not quality programs and probably shouldbe avoided. 

Aside from a GMAT or GRE test, students who wish to enrollin an MBA program must first have earned an undergraduate degree. CompetitiveMBA programs will require not only an undergraduate degree, but one that wasearned with a high grade-point average, or GPA, as well. While theundergraduate degree need not be in a business discipline, it does help improvea student’s chances of getting accepted into a prestigious MBA program.

Some MBA programs will accept students directly upongraduation with an undergraduate degree, while others prefer to admit studentswho have at least two to three years of practical work experience under theirbelts.

All quality MBA programs have similar course offerings. Mostbusiness schools have what they consider to be “core” courses in their MBAprograms, which students can expect to take during the first year of studytoward earning their MBA. These classes cover the disciplines of accounting,economics, finance, management, marketing and organizational behavior.

Students who have declared a specialized area ofconcentration during their MBA studies also can expect to take additional classesthat focus on their area of specialty. For instance, students who choose tospecialize in marketing may take more classes geared toward marketing thanothers enrolled in the MBA program.

 Areas ofspecialization for an MBA include, but are not limited to:

·      Marketing:This area of specialization prepares students to work in any number ofmarketing positions. In addition to the core courses expected of all MBAstudents, those who have declared a concentration in marketing can expect totake additional classes which focus on things like writing ad copy andcreating/launching a public relations or marketing campaign.

·      Entrepreneurship:Specializing in this area is ideal for those who envision starting theirown business. Students can expect to focus on critical-thinking skills that arenecessary for dealing with the rigors of owning your own company.

·      HumanResources: This specialty will prepare the student to work as the head of ahuman resources department within any size of company. In addition to the corestudy areas, students who specialize in this discipline also can expect tolearn how to recruit, hire, train and dismiss employees.
